I have the opportunity to take a tutoring job on the side. The family lives less than two minutes from my school, basically on the other side of campus and the neighboring country club.
This particular couple would like me to tutor their 7 year old and 9 year old in United States history; apparently the kids are quite bright, and have an interest in history. The parents are, to put it lightly, loaded (palatial house, housekeeper/nanny-type, the works). This gig would easily pay for my gas for the week of going back and forth to school, plus some, for just two extra hours of work a week.
But...7 and 9? For starters, other than my nephew and friends' kids, I've never really had close dealings with the elementary school age group. Secondly, do kids of that age (barring the occasional exception) really have a pressing interest in history that would require Mom and Dad to go spend some cash on a tutor? I met with the family this afternoon, and I have to say, it was a little..uncomfortable. Not uncomfortable in the "these are horrible people" or "these people are going to eat me" sense, but rather, "they're asking a high school teacher to tutor a couple of kids in 2nd and 4th grade in a subject that they probably couldn't care less about." In fact, while I was talking with the parentals, the older child was bugging his dad to set up the Playstation 3 so that he and his friends could play in the basement.
(Oh, and they'd also like me to tutor the kids in a bit of French history, as they are traveling to France later in the year and would like the kids to have a background in the subject.)
Edited to add: Tutoring's a no-go, they decided against it. Translation: Mom told Dad, "The kids are 7 and 9, the kids do NOT need a history tutor."
