I'm one of those fortunate people who has a calling - I'm a teacher. I've known that's what I was supposed to do for years. Put me in front of a classroom and I'm in my element. There are very few natural highs as big as when you see that glimmer, that dawning moment of understanding, of true learning, in a student's eyes.
Learning history is perhaps one of the ways to understand our current lives. "To view current events as a historian is to account for all perspectives, even those of your enemy. It is to know the past and to use such relevant history as a template for expectations. It is, most of all, to force reason ahead of instict, to refuse to demonize that which you hate, and to, most of all, accept your own fallibility."
Starting Monday, I am the new history instructor at a very prestigious private school.
